The preparations for the engagement had lasted several months.
The son of one of the city’s most prominent businessmen, named Alex, was going to marry a girl named Emma. They met several years ago, overcame many difficulties together, and truly loved each other.
However, there was one person who opposed this relationship from the beginning.
Alex’s mother, Margaret.
She felt that Emma was not suitable for her son.
In Margaret’s opinion, the future wife of the heir to a large company should come from a wealthy family, have connections in society, and bring benefits to the family business.
Emma, on the other hand, had grown up in an ordinary family and worked as an architect.
Despite this, Alex was sure of his choice and never allowed his mother to interfere in his relationship.
With each passing month, Margaret’s antipathy only increased.
He looked for flaws in his future daughter-in-law, tried to convince his son to cancel the wedding, and even introduced her to the daughters of his influential friends.
But it was all useless.
Alex always repeated the same thing:
—I love Emma and I will only marry her.
On the day of the engagement, a luxurious restaurant was rented on the upper floors of one of the tallest skyscrapers in the city.
In the evening, the living room was filled with family, friends, and business associates of the family.
The music was playing, the waiters were serving champagne, and the guests were congratulating the bride and groom-to-be.
From the outside, everything seemed perfect.
But Margaret watched Emma silently all night.
At one point, he approached the girl and said to her in a low voice:
—Emma, can you come here for a minute? We need to talk alone.
Without suspecting anything, the girl agreed.
A few minutes later, they went up to the open rooftop of the building.
There was nobody around.
All that could be heard was the wind and the distant noise of the city.
Margaret took an envelope out of her bag and handed it to Emma.
“Here’s five million dollars. Take the money and disappear from my son’s life.”
Emma looked at her in surprise.
—Are you serious?
-Absolutely.
—No. I love Alex and I’m not going anywhere.
Margaret’s face changed instantly.
—You don’t understand. Anyway, I’m not going to allow you to be part of our family.
—That’s not up to you to decide.
For a few seconds, the two women looked at each other in silence.
Then Margaret said in a cold voice:
—Then I’ll get rid of you in another way.
Emma frowned.
—And what are you going to do?
—For example, I could push you from down here and say you tripped and fell. I’m a respected person. They’ll believe me.
—He wouldn’t dare.
But at that very moment Margaret pushed her roughly.
Emma lost her balance and disappeared over the edge of the roof.
The mother-in-law approached the railing and looked down. At that moment, it seemed to her that everything had ended exactly as she had planned. But the woman couldn’t even imagine how this cruel act would end for her.

Emma did not fall to the ground.
Months earlier, on the opposite side of the skyscraper, maintenance work on the facade had begun.
A special construction platform for window cleaners had been installed along the length of the building.
That’s exactly where the girl fell.
The workers immediately called an ambulance and the police.
Emma suffered several fractures, but survived.
While the doctors were attending to her, one of the workers informed the police of an important detail.
He had an action camera attached to his helmet, which happened to be recording the building’s facade during the work.
The recording clearly showed two women arguing near the edge of the roof, and then one of them intentionally pushing the other.
Half an hour later, the police were already going up to the restaurant.
Margaret was still trying to tell the guests a story about an accident, but no one got to hear her to the end.
The investigators showed the recording to Alex.
When the man saw the camera footage, he didn’t say a word to his mother.
He simply turned around.
Months later, Margaret appeared in court.
The video became irrefutable proof. She lost her social standing, her position on the board of directors of the family business, and the respect of the people who for years had considered her an example of integrity.
And he also lost the most important thing.
To his son.
After the trial, Alex completely cut off contact with his mother.
And a year later, he and Emma finally got married.
