The colonel stood on deck, his hands clasped behind his back, gazing calmly out at the raging ocean. The wind stung his face, the temperature plummeted to forty below zero, and the icy water below looked like a death trap for anyone who fell in. When the woman’s body disappeared beneath the waves, he even allowed himself a faint, almost imperceptible smile. At that moment, it seemed to him that the matter was solved for good.
She had been waiting for this day for a long time. From the moment she first appeared on the ship, everything went wrong. She was new, but too self-assured, too principled. On her very first day, she noticed what others preferred not to see and reported it to her superiors. That almost cost her her career. Back then, she did nothing, but she didn’t forget the offense. She simply waited for the right moment.
And that moment had arrived.
The ship had sailed far out to sea. Communication with the coast was weak, almost nonexistent. There was no one on deck; the cold paralyzed movement, and all around was only ice and endless water. She stood by the rail, unaware that a decision had already been made behind her. In an instant, she understood: there would be no other chance.
He approached silently, almost without making a sound. One sudden movement—and it all happened in a second.
—You wanted justice? Here it is.
Her scream dissolved in the wind and her body disappeared into the icy water.
Several people saw it. They stood to one side, exchanging glances, but no one intervened. Fear of the colonel was stronger. They all pretended nothing had happened.
The colonel was certain that everything had ended exactly as he had planned.
But she was wrong. Because she couldn’t even imagine how that act would backfire on her. The continuation of this story can be found in the first comment.
The cold didn’t kill her. The pain didn’t break her. With effort, through the icy water, clinging to metal and ledges, the woman managed to get out. Her hands were cut, her breathing was ragged, but she didn’t stop. While everyone on the ship thought she was dead, she came back.
And the first thing he did was go to the radio station.
Her voice was weak, but there was no fear in it. Only clear words and facts. She told everything.
The next day, when the ship arrived at the station, they were already being greeted at the dock. Not just by those who were there to receive them: uniformed personnel, police, special services. The atmosphere on board changed immediately. The tension became palpable.
At first, the colonel didn’t understand anything. He went out on deck with his usual confidence, but in seconds he saw their stares. And then he understood everything.
She was taken to the front. Alive.
With bandaged hands, pale, but standing. She looked at him calmly, without shouting or hatred. And at that moment it became clear: now everything would end in a very different way than he had planned.
He was arrested in front of the entire crew.
Those same people who had been silent yesterday, now stared intently. And everyone understood how that story had ended.
The colonel wanted to get rid of a problem.
But in the end, he became one himself.
