—Your husband is not alone… there is a girl in your living room, drinking wine from your glasses.

That was the first thing the doorman said to Elisa when he saw her enter the building early, with a dusty suitcase and three old paintings wrapped in a blanket.

Elisa froze.

Not because she didn’t suspect anything. For months, Rodrigo had been arriving late, smiling at his phone, and turning off the screen when she approached. But imagining it was one thing, and finding another woman living in his house, laughing as if she owned the place, was quite another.

Elisa had learned from childhood not to complain.

She grew up in a children’s home in Guadalajara, without parents, without a last name to explain where she came from, without anyone to defend her… until Doña Teresa arrived.

Doña Tere was the caretaker at the children’s home. A strong woman with calloused hands and a huge heart, she was the first person to give Elisa a hug without asking for anything in return. “You are hereby informed that you have been named heir to a property belonging to Mr. Bernardo Román.”

Elisa read the name over and over. She didn’t know any Bernardo Román. She thought it was a mistake, but the next day she went to the notary’s office.

The notary, Marcelo Medina, explained to him that it was an old mansion in a town in Michoacán called San Román del Monte.

—The gentleman wrote that you were his own flesh and blood—Marcelo said carefully. —He also wrote that perhaps you knew nothing.

Elisa felt a lump in her throat.

When she told Rodrigo, he didn’t hesitate.

—Accept it. Even if it’s a disaster, we can get something out of it. These days, nobody turns down an inheritance.

What Elisa didn’t know was that Rodrigo was happy for another reason: that very week he would be having the company’s annual party, and he had already promised to bring Rita, his young secretary, as if she were his official date.

So Elisa traveled.

At the bus station, an old woman sat next to her. She had bright eyes and a voice that seemed to know secrets.

“Don’t sell that house,” he told her without introducing himself. “And when you arrive, change the wallpaper first. But don’t throw away anything you find. Check everything carefully.”

Hours later, Elisa arrived in San Román del Monte. The house was enormous, made of carved wood, with antique balconies and a chapel nearby. The neighbors, Don Neco and Doña Catalina, recognized her as soon as they saw her.

—You’re Elisa, aren’t you? Don Bernardo said you’d come someday.

That night, between pot coffee and country bread, they told her a story that left her breathless.

Bernardo Román had been his grandfather.

His daughter Vera, a beautiful and rebellious young woman, became pregnant without revealing the father’s identity. Bernardo, proud and furious, sent her away to live with her mother, Doña Rosa, to avoid a scandal. But Vera disappeared before she could explain. Later, word spread that she had given the baby to strangers.

Elisa then understood that that baby was her.

His family had indeed existed.

And someone had lied to him his whole life.

The next day, trembling, she began to tear the wallpaper off a room. She remembered the old woman at the power plant. “Don’t throw away what you find.”

A section of the wall sounded hollow. Elisa put her fingers in, pulled hard, and a package wrapped in a blanket fell to the floor.

Inside there were three old portraits of blonde women with huge, dark eyes.

They all looked like her.

Elisa returned to the city with the paintings to examine them, determined to find the truth. But as she opened her apartment door, she heard a woman laughing in the living room.

Rodrigo came out of the kitchen looking pale.

Behind him appeared Rita, in a bathrobe, with a glass in her hand.

“Oh, Elisa… what a shame you’re finding out like this,” she said with a cruel smile. “Rodrigo has been wanting to leave you for months.”

Elisa didn’t scream.

She just looked at her husband, then at the woman who stood in his place, and for the first time in her life she felt something inside her break forever.

Elisa placed the paintings on the dining room table with a calmness that frightened Rodrigo more than any scream.

“You have two days to get your things out,” she said.

Rita let out a nervous giggle.

—Excuse me, your things? This apartment belongs to Rodrigo.

Elisa looked at her for the first time.

—Then let him explain something to you: it’s been in my name for eight years. I bought it myself, with my salary, when he said he had “liquidity problems.” He lives here alone.

Rodrigo opened his mouth, but said nothing.

Rita lost her color.

For years, Rodrigo had flaunted a life that wasn’t his own. His suits, his dinners, his connections, even the promotions he’d earned—everything had been sustained by Elisa’s elegant presence. He took her to meetings to impress, but in private, he treated her as if she were worthless.

That night, Elisa slept in a hotel. At dawn, she went to the university and submitted her temporary resignation. Afterward, she took the portraits to a restoration workshop in the historic center.

The specialist barely saw the first painting before becoming serious.

—Madam, this isn’t old decor. This portrait could be over a hundred years old. And the signature… it looks like it’s from an important 19th-century painter.

Elisa felt her legs give way.

At that moment, someone called her name from behind her.

It was Marcelo, the notary.

“I thought you’d be in San Román,” he said. “Is everything alright?”

Elisa, tired of pretending to be strong, told him what had happened: the inheritance, the neighbors, Rodrigo’s betrayal, the portraits hidden on the wall.

Marcelo didn’t interrupt her. He listened to her like no one had listened to her in years.

“Elisa,” he finally said, “I made some calls after her visit to the notary’s office. I didn’t want to bother her until I had something concrete, but I found out something strange.”

She looked up.

—What data?

—Don Bernardo changed his will two months before he died. Before that, the house was going to be given to a cultural association. But when he found out you existed, he changed everything.

—How did you find me?

Marcelo lowered his voice.

—By a woman named Gloria Salazar. She was a nurse at the hospital where you were born.

Elisa felt like the world was stopping.

Marcelo explained that Gloria had recognized Elisa years before, at a party organized by Doña Teresa, but had never dared to say anything to her. She had been on duty when Vera, Elisa’s mother, escaped from the hospital, abandoning her newborn baby.

“Did my mother abandon me in a hospital?” Elisa asked.

Marcelo nodded in pain.

—Yes. But there’s something else. Vera didn’t give a real name. The police searched for weeks. Then an elderly woman came forward claiming to know her, but the file was lost.

—Did he get lost?

—Or someone made him disappear.

That phrase stuck in his chest.

Elisa returned to San Román del Monte the next day. This time Marcelo accompanied her, carrying documents, copies of the will, and a folder full of notes.

Don Neco and Doña Catalina greeted them with chard tamales and atole. Upon hearing Gloria Salazar’s name, Doña Catalina crossed herself.

—That woman came once, many years ago. She spoke with Don Bernardo in secret. After that, he locked himself away for three days.

“And what happened next?” Elisa asked.

Don Neco looked towards the mansion.

He started searching for his granddaughter like crazy. He placed ads, paid investigators, went to hospitals, orphanages, and parishes. But Doña Rosa, his wife, was already ill and never forgave herself for what Vera did.

Did my grandmother know I was alive?

Elisa remembered the portraits.

Marcelo suggested reviewing the entire mansion.

For two days they opened trunks, drawers, and wardrobes. They found old dresses, letters from relatives, photographs of local festivals, baptismal certificates, and newspaper clippings. On the third afternoon, while Marcelo was checking a bookcase, Elisa noticed a small crack behind another section of wallpaper, in the second-floor hallway.

He pulled slowly.

The wood behind the wall had a lid. Marcelo used a knife to lift it.

Inside there was a metal box.

Elisa opened it with trembling hands.

Inside he found a yellowed letter addressed to “my granddaughter, if she ever returns to this house.”

The lyrics were Bernardo’s.

Elisa began to read, but stopped at the first line:

“Your mother didn’t act alone.”

Marcelo looked at her, alarmed.

Elisa continued reading, her heart pounding in her chest, just as a car was heard stopping in front of the mansion outside.

Don Neco shouted from the patio:

Vera Román stepped out of the car as if time itself had been afraid to touch her. She was no longer the beautiful young woman in the family portraits, but her eyes remained the same: enormous, dark, restless.

“I didn’t come to apologize,” Vera said, before anyone else could speak. “I came because I was told Bernardo died and that you left the house open.”

Elisa clutched the letter to her chest.

—Is that all you care about? The house?

Vera looked at the carved facade, the balconies, the chapel in the background.

—This house was mine too.

Marcelo stepped forward.

—Legally it is no longer so.

Vera ignored it.

“Your grandfather took everything from me. He judged me, humiliated me, and turned me away as if I were a disgrace. And now you come along and take what he denied me?”

Elisa felt anger rising in her throat, but this time she didn’t swallow it.

—I didn’t come to take anything from you. I grew up with nothing. Without a mother, without grandparents, without a photo, without an answer. You knew I existed.

Vera looked away.

—I was young.

—I was a baby.

The silence fell heavily.

Then Elisa opened Bernardo’s letter and continued reading aloud.

Bernardo confessed that, years later, he discovered something terrible: Vera hadn’t left her daughter out of fear alone. She had been pressured by a distant aunt, Amalia Román, who told her that if she returned with a baby whose father was unknown, she would destroy her ailing mother and ruin the family name. Amalia gave her money to disappear and promised to take care of the child.

But Vera, instead of giving the baby to a family, left her at the hospital.

And she lied, saying that some gypsies had taken her away.

Bernardo spent years looking in the wrong place.

When he finally learned that the girl had survived, it was too late. Elisa was an adult, Doña Rosa had died, and he was ill. He didn’t dare look for her directly. He simply changed his will and left instructions.

“If this letter reaches you, please forgive me. I wasn’t a good father to Vera, nor a good grandfather to you. But this house isn’t a prize. It’s a root. And no one should live without roots.”

Elisa finished reading, crying silently.

“I thought you were going to die,” she whispered. “You were born prematurely. You were so tiny… They told me no one would save you.”

—But I lived —Elisa replied—. And you never came back.

Vera tried to approach, but Elisa backed away.

For the first time, Vera lowered her head.

Marcelo started visiting San Román every weekend. At first, he said he was going to help with legal paperwork. Then, he said he wanted to oversee the restoration. Later, he stopped making excuses.

Elisa discovered him one afternoon on the stairs, pasting new wallpaper with such serious concentration that it made her laugh for the first time in a long time.

“Do you realize?” she said. “A woman at headquarters told me to start with the wallpaper.”

Marcelo looked at her.

—Then we should thank him. He brought us here.

Over time, Elisa transformed the old house into a vibrant place once more. She hung portraits of her ancestors in the dining room, opened a small library for the village children, and organized Sunday lunches, just like the ones Doña Tere used to give her when she was a child.

A year later, Marcelo proposed to her on the carved wooden balcony, while the church bells rang for the patron saint’s festival.

Elisa said yes.

Not because I was afraid of being alone.

Vera wrote several letters. Elisa took months to answer the first one. She didn’t call her Mom. Not yet. But she wrote her one sentence:
